AUSTIN — AUSTINE COUNTY, Texas (AP) A storage facility at the University of Texas at Austin will be transformed into a large solar facility that could help meet a growing demand for solar energy.

The solar installation will be the largest in Texas and the fourth largest in the United States.

It was announced Thursday by the UT Austin campus and the UT System of Higher Education that the solar project will be constructed on the former UT Austin Center, which is located at the corner of Lamar Boulevard and Bandera Drive.

UT-Austin has partnered with a private developer to build the facility, which will house a variety of facilities for students and faculty and offices.

The new solar facility will replace a storage facility that will be built next year on the site of the former Banderas Center for Solar Energy, which was decommissioned in 2010.
