The German carmaker Audi, which has been accused of patent infringement by the United States and Europe, won a $1 billion verdict in a California patent case on Tuesday.

The court ruled in favor of a California-based inventor, who argued that Audi infringed on his invention by not disclosing the existence of the patent.

The judge in the case agreed with the inventor’s position and issued the $1 million judgment.

The verdict means Audi will pay $1,000 per patent infringement claim filed in the U.K. and Germany, the largest patent infringement awards in Europe.
